Pommes et Serviette 1879-1880
Oil on canvas
49.2 x 60.3cm

The still life was one of Cezanne's most important thematic genres. The apples and the bunched up napkin on the table in this painting were arranged by the artist himself to form the ideal composition for his canvas. The leaf pattern in the background is from the wallpaper, and appears in a series of still lifes dating from 1879-80.
