SEIJI TOGO MEMORIAL YASUDA KASAI MUSEUM OF ART
forerunner of the present, SEIJI TOGO MEMORIAL SOMPO JAPAN MUSEUM OF ART opened
its doors on the 42nd floor of new Headquarters building in June of 1976. The
Yasuda Fire and Marine Insurance Co., Ltd., at that time, availed itself of the
opportunity afforded by the construction of its new multi-story head office building
in the new city center of Shinjuku to establish the museum and its administrative
organization, the Yasuda Kasai Fine Art Foundation.
The museum's core collection is comprised of the works of Seiji Togo, a noted
Japanese artist closely associated throughout his life with Yasuda Fire. Sympathizing
with its aspirations of creating an art museum that would not only provide an
opportunity for the general public to enjoy quality works of art but contribute,
at the same time, to cultural improvement, Togo donated some 200 of his own works
to the museum, along with his collection of over 250 works by other Japanese and
foreign artists.
Togo's works, painted between 1914 and 1977, are on display in the museum throughout
most of the year offering a comprehensive and in-depth perspective of the unique
style and the wide range of activities of one of Japan's most important Western-style
artists. Displayed alongside the Togo collection are other important modern and
current works by Japanese and foreign artists, as well as periodic exhibits aimed
at promoting art and international exchange.
In addition to its administration of the museum, SOMPO JAPAN Fine Art Foundation
also sponsors and confers a number of awards. Exhibitions introducing the award-winners'
works are also held on a periodic basis. SOMPO JAPAN MUSEUM OF ART has steadily
expanded its collection from the approximately 450 pieces at its inception to
some 640 pieces as of June 2001, including the works of Grandma Moses, Pierre-Auguste
Renoir, Tsuguharu Fujita, Ryusei Kishida, Kayo Yamaguchi and other award-winning
artists.
And the museum has filled out its collection with such acquisitions as Vincent
van Gogh's "Sunflowers" in October 1987, Paul Gauguin's "L'Allee
des Alyscamps, Arles" in January 1989, and Paul Cezanne's "Pommes et
Serviette" in January 1990.
Amid the urban hustle and bustle of Shinjuku, SEIJI TOGO MEMORIAL SOMPO JAPAN
MUSEUM OF ART, perched in its 42nd floor eyrie, offers not only an island of exquisite
peace and calm, but also a magnificent view of Tokyo and its environs from its
observation gallery. |
